All incoming freshmen and AA/AS degree Florida Community College transfers are considered for the following

 scholarships when they apply. The earlier you apply for admissions, the better your chances are for a scholarship. 

Scholarships are awarded until the funds are depleted.

Life Gets Better Scholarship

Incoming freshmen designated National Achievement, Hispanic, or Merit Finalist or Scholar by the National Merit Corporation, having an unweighted 3.50 high school GPA and having a 1950 on the SAT or 29 on the ACT will receive the following over four years: Tuition and fees, room, board, $500/semester for books, $500/semester stipend, internships and a laptop.  Awardee must major in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics or Physics in order to be eligible for this scholarship.  Students must take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) in the junior year of high school to compete in the National Merit Corporation programs.

• Out-of-State value over 4-year period   $113,940

 

Distinguished Scholar Award                                                 (Florida Residents)

Incoming freshmen who have scores of at least 1800 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT and an unweighted 3.50 high school GPA:

Florida Residents receive a full four-year scholarship that pays for tuition and fees, double occupancy room rate, and board.  The $350 housing deposit will be waived for Florida Bright Futures Scholar awardees. 

National Achievement Semifinalists/Finalist and students majoring in Engineering will receive up to $500 a semester for books. A National Achievement Finalist will receive a laptop.

• In-State value over 4-year period   $58,177  (Semifinalist/Finalists and Engineering majors $62,176)

A National Achievement Scholar will receive a laptop, $500/semester for books and a $500/semester stipend.

• In-State value over 4-year period   $66,176

Distinguished Scholar Award                                        (Non-Florida Residents)

Incoming freshmen who have scores of at least 1800 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT and an unweighted 3.50 high school GPA:

Out-of–State Students receive a four-year scholarship that pays for tuition and fees.  Additionally, students majoring in Engineering will receive $2,000 per year to be used toward room and board.

• Out-of-State value over 4-year period   $71,176 (Engineering majors $79,176)

A National Achievement Semifinalist will receive double occupancy room rate and board. A National Achievement Finalist will receive a laptop.

• Out-of-State value over 4-year period   $105,940

A National Achievement Scholar will receive a laptop, $500/semester for books and a $500/semester stipend.

• Out-of-State value over 4-year period   $113,940

ADOPTED HIGH SCHOOL AWARD

This is a full four-year scholarship that pays for tuition and fees, double occupancy room rate, and board.  This scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who has attained the honor of Valedictorian or Salutatorian of his/her high school class. This student is selected from areas where contractual agreements with the high school and/or school board districts have been previously established: The adopted high schools are:

George W. Gore Assistantship Scholarship

This is a four-year scholarship.  Incoming freshmen who have at least 1650 on the SAT or 23 on the ACT and a minimum unweighted 3.0 high school GPA qualify for the following awards:

Incoming freshmen majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics or Physics will receive an extra award of $1,000 annually and Engineering majors will receive an extra award of $2,000 annually.

 

HIGH SCHOOL & FLORIDA COMMUNITY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

This is a two-year scholarship for incoming freshmen who received the high school diploma and the AA/AS degree from a Florida Community College at the same time.  This scholarship is worth $4,000/year.  Alternately, incoming freshmen who qualify for the GWG Assistantship at a higher level can be offered the GWG Assistantship.

• Value over 2-year period   $8,000

 

FLORIDA COMMUNITY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established to assist high achieving Florida community/junior college graduates.  This partial scholarship is a two-year undergraduate scholarship awarded to an AA/AS Degree transfer student who has a minimum 2.50 GPA and is not enrolled as a FAMU student.  The annual amount of the scholarship is as follows:

Need Parent Volunteers

BEACON Financial Aid Program

The Duval County Public Schools’ BEACON program is seeking volunteers to assure that high school seniors receive critical information about the college financial aid process through a personal, small group information session with a trained volunteer.  BEACON stands for Bringing Economic And Career Opportunities Nearer and represents a districtwide effort to provide assistance to every high school senior.  The district School Counseling Department recruits and trains volunteers for this very large outreach effort!  We are looking for folks who can attend a half day training on January 23 from 8-12, and commit to all the days needed (January 26th and January 27th; 7:00AM - 1:30PM)  If  you are interested in this program, please complete the attached form and submit as soon as possible.  If you have questions, please contact Joni Shook at shookj@duvalschools.org.

1. Complete the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) at
www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org to be evaluated for over 15 state financial programs, including Bright Futures. The site opened December 1st! You must complete this application before you graduate from high school!

2. Apply for a PIN number for you and one parent at www.pin.ed.gov so that you can sign your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) electronically. Do this ASAP!

3. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.gov Apply early, as soon as tax information is available. The site opened January 1st!

4. Check on the scholarship and financial aid web pages at colleges, universities, or vocational programs where you are interested. Apply for those where you might qualify.

Financial Aid Information

A few points parents and students should remember about financial aid

1. Never rule out a college because of cost alone (college may offer scholarships, grants, aid, etc).
2. For students to be considered for financial aid - money given or loaned to students to help them pay for college - they must apply.
3. Applying for financial aid is like applying for admission to college, but they're not the same thing.
4. The financial aid application process usually has its own forms, deadlines and requirements - and students don't have to wait to be admitted to a college before they apply for financial aid.
5. Compare costs before applying to a college - Net price calculators can provide an estimate of financial aid eligibility and remaining college costs and should be available on every college's website.
6. Get advice - The financial aid office at local colleges often provides workshops or can give advice.
7. Compare awards - Look at grants, loans and parental contributions before making a final decision on a college.

Terms

• Grants - Financial aid, usually based on financial need, that does not need to be repaid.
• Scholarships - Money awarded to students based on academic or other achievements to help pay for education expenses.
• Loans - Borrowing money from the federal government or a college is called taking out a loan.  A loan must be paid back with an extra charge called interest.  Loans are considered financial aid.
• Work-study - The Federal Work-Study Program offers paid part time jobs to help students pay for part of their college cost.  Not available up front to pay tuition.  Work-study can be earned throughout the academic year.

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

• Online application that collects demographic and financial information about the student and family.
• Normally filed electronically and is available online in both English and Spanish (a paper application in either English or Spanish is available upon request).
• For the 2015-2016 academic year, the FAFSA may be filled out beginning January 1, 2015. 
• While most colleges set FAFSA filing deadlines, do not forget to check for state filing deadlines.

IRS Data Retrieval Tool

• The IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows students and parents to access their IRS information to complete the FAFSA by transferring the data directly into their FAFSA from the IRS website.
• If the student and family are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, it is highly recommended that they use the tool for several reasons:
• It's the easiest way for students and families to provide their tax data.
• It's the best way of ensuring that the FAFSA has accurate tax information.

If you want to sign up for the February ACT or March SAT, please see Ms. Tillman during lunch in room 822.

Early College Juniors/Seniors - you can get your waivers from Ms. Tillman in room 822 from 2-2:30 on Mondays and Tuesdays.

ACT and SAT Scores are online - Check your account!

If you took the December ACT or SAT, check your account at www.actstudent.org or www.collegeboard.org because your scores are probably in!
